Runes: A book of our ancestors – stems – or signs.
Rune means speech, song, writing and knowledge. Until about year 500 the Germanic 24 rune futhark was used in Denmark. Approx. from year 500 until year 800 there were a number of temporary versions until it ended up with the 16 rune futhark. From year 800 only the 16 rune futhark was used. From year 900 and forward the form and value of the sound were constantly changed. From year 1300 the runes were adjusted to the Roman alphabet.

In the viking period people in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Iceland understood each other. The language was the same. The language was called dönsk tunga ”Danish tongue.” Even British people could easily make themselves understood in Scandinavia. At the end of the viking period the language started to change, and after some hundreds of years each country had its own dialect.

4 letters had double meaning. F was also used as a V. G was also used as a J. A was also used as an O. S was also used as a C.

Eventually, the runes could not hold their their own in the competition with the Roman writing. However, it did not happen overnight, but on the contrary over many years.
